Menopause Brain Changes Differ from Puberty and Pregnancy

A new study in Nature Communications finds that the menopausal transition does not cause an overall decrease in cortical gray matter volume, unlike puberty and pregnancy. Researchers compared brains of women at different stages and found little change during menopause, suggesting hormonal effects vary across life stages. The research, led by a doctoral candidate at Amsterdam UMC, compared women across three menopausal stages. It found that the typical age-related decline in gray matter does not accelerate during the transition itself, suggesting that hormonal fluctuations at this stage do not trigger the same structural remodeling seen in earlier reproductive milestones.
The authors acknowledge that participants self-identified their menopausal status without clinical hormone verification. Furthermore, the results conflict with earlier work showing specific gray matter loss in the hippocampus. The lead researcher emphasized that linking these structural observations to cognitive outcomes remains premature, underscoring the need for larger, more rigorous investigations.
This finding could shift clinical perspectives, potentially reducing anxiety about inevitable cognitive decline during menopause. It may also encourage funding agencies to prioritize longitudinal studies of the female brain, leading to better-targeted therapies for perimenopausal symptoms.
