Windows Server 2016 hit by crash errors after August security patch
Microsoft reports that the August 2026 security update can cause recurring Application Error events on Windows Server 2016 systems when the Compatibility Appraiser diagnostic service is active. The issue leads to CompatTelRunner.exe crashing with exception code 0xc0000409, affecting both physical and virtual machines. Microsoft says the failures do not impact device functionality and is working on a fix for a future update.
The recurring failure stems from the Compatibility Appraiser telemetry component, which checks hardware and software readiness for major upgrades. This background process triggers the crash, generating Event ID 1000 logs with exception code 0xc0000409. Microsoft clarifies that these errors are cosmetic in nature, causing no operational disruption to the server's core functions.
This issue follows a pattern of recent server-related bugs. In June, Microsoft resolved a separate Windows Server 2016 problem where security updates failed to install on outdated systems. Additionally, Windows Server 2025 recently faced application crashes linked to memory management changes, specifically affecting apps using Address Windowing Extensions.
For organizations still operating Windows Server 2016, these recurring alerts could create operational noise, potentially distracting IT teams from genuine system issues. While Microsoft states functionality is unaffected, the persistent error logs may prompt unnecessary diagnostics or premature reboots, consuming valuable administrative time. The absence of a specific resolution timeline could also undermine confidence in the patch cycle, leading some administrators to delay future security updates, which may inadvertently increase exposure to actual vulnerabilities.
