Hong Kong Ballet unveils new work inspired by Dunhuang's ancient caves
Hong Kong Ballet's resident choreographers Ricky Hu and Mai Jingwen have created a new production inspired by the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The couple visited the caves to find a fresh narrative, aiming to avoid the many existing dance dramas based on the site. Their ballet, 'Dunhuang: In Search of Light', will premiere at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in October.
The married choreographic duo, Ricky Hu Songwei and Mai Jingwen, initially struggled with the assignment due to the sheer volume of existing Dunhuang-themed dance works. To find a unique angle, they traveled to the Mogao Caves last October, seeking a narrative that would avoid fixed audience stereotypes.
The resulting ballet, *Dunhuang: In Search of Light*, debuts on October 16 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. It is a co-commission of the Greater Bay Area International Theatre Festival and a co-production with the China Arts and Entertainment Group, though additional performances across the Greater Bay Area remain unannounced.
This production could broaden cultural engagement in Hong Kong by presenting a renowned mainland heritage site through a contemporary ballet lens. It may attract both seasoned ballet-goers and tourists interested in the Greater Bay Area's cultural offerings. By collaborating with mainland arts groups, it could foster cross-border artistic exchange, potentially influencing how regional audiences perceive traditional Chinese motifs. However, its reach may remain limited to Hong Kong unless the planned Greater Bay Area tour materializes.
