New furnace process promises lower-cost, low-emission steel

Laureen Meroueh founded Hertha Metals to commercialize a furnace that converts iron ore into refined liquid steel in a single step, using natural gas instead of coal. This method cuts emissions by at least half and reduces costs by 25% compared to traditional blast furnaces. The technology aims to decarbonize steelmaking without waiting for a zero-carbon system.
Meroueh's unconventional path began with early college enrollment at age twelve, leading to a mechanical engineering doctorate from MIT. After managing a green hydrogen startup, she founded Hertha in 2022, influenced by her family's entrepreneurial culture. Her Texas-based pilot plant currently produces one metric ton of steel daily.
With roughly $20 million raised, investors highlight that Hertha achieved greater output than competitors who spent two to five times as much. While the industry pursues hydrogen-based zero-carbon methods, Hertha deliberately targets immediate improvements to the century-old blast furnace process, prioritizing practical, near-term emission reductions over waiting for a fully green system.
If Hertha's single-step furnace scales successfully, it could significantly lower the carbon footprint of construction, automotive, and infrastructure sectors that depend on steel. By reducing production costs by a quarter, the technology may make cleaner steel economically viable for manufacturers facing tight margins, potentially accelerating industry-wide adoption. However, the reliance on natural gas means it is not a permanent zero-carbon solution, so its societal impact could be a transitional bridge that buys time for future hydrogen-based systems to mature.
