Fruit Fly Brain Connectome Used to Run Doom and Mario 64

Google and HHMI Janelia have mapped the complete brain and nervous system of an adult male fruit fly, using AI to reconstruct over 166,000 neurons. Shortly after, engineers used the connectome to run Doom and Super Mario 64. This demonstrates the potential of neural mapping for computational tasks.
The connectome, designated MaleCNS v1.0, was assembled by processing millions of 2D microscopic images into a 3D model using AI. This milestone builds on over a century of fruit fly research in genetics and neuroscience, though the insect's 166,000 neurons remain a tiny fraction of the roughly 86 billion found in humans.
Within days of the announcement, developers began using the open-source neural map for gaming experiments. For Doom, each frame activates sensory neurons, with output mapped to controls, and damage triggers dopamine cells as a reinforcement signal to encourage survival. Similar work is being pursued with Super Mario 64.
This demonstration could signal a shift in how biological neural networks are repurposed for computational tasks. While the fruit fly brain is vastly simpler than a human's, successfully mapping and driving it to perform complex actions may accelerate neuromorphic computing research. Society could eventually see AI systems that mimic biological efficiency, potentially leading to more energy-efficient processors. However, the immediate impact is largely academic, highlighting the gap between mapping structure and achieving true general intelligence.
