Hong Kong museum honours Cantopop icon Leslie Cheung with rare artefacts and home recreation
The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is opening a major exhibition for the late singer-actor Leslie Cheung, featuring over 300 items including stage costumes, vinyl records, and a recreated room from his former residence. The display runs from September 9 to May 2027 and includes loans from Cheung's close friends and fan groups, with many pieces shown publicly for the first time. Six of his films will also be screened during the exhibition.
The exhibition, organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, marks a significant expansion over a prior 2023 tribute. It features over 300 items, with many sourced from private collections of Cheung's inner circle, including his close friends and dedicated fan groups, offering rare glimpses into his personal and professional life.
Beyond costumes and memorabilia, the display includes a faithful reconstruction of his home's interior, created with his original designer. A photograph of friends taken in that space after his passing adds a poignant layer. Additionally, a curated selection of six films will be shown throughout the exhibition's run, which spans nearly eight months.
This retrospective could significantly boost cultural tourism and local engagement in Hong Kong, drawing both nostalgic longtime fans and younger generations discovering Cheung's legacy. The free admission and extended run may foster a renewed appreciation for Cantopop's golden era, potentially influencing contemporary music and film discussions.
