Performers Pull Out of Lisbon Comedy Festival Over Seinfeld's Political Views
Several acts, including actress Inês Aires Pereira and comedy duo Cebola Mol, have withdrawn from the inaugural MEO Commedia a La Carte Fest in Lisbon. They cited Jerry Seinfeld's support for Israel and his comments about the Free Palestine movement. The festival is scheduled for Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.
Inês Aires Pereira withdrew her show Namastê, citing "indefensible" ideas and a genocide. The duo Cebola Mol also exited, sharing a watermelon image, a recognized Palestinian solidarity symbol. Several other acts, including Tributo Pop, Conjunto Cuca Monga, Pedro Tochas, and Vhils, withdrew without public explanation.
Seinfeld's controversial remarks at Duke University, where he equated the Free Palestine movement with the Ku Klux Klan, sparked the backlash. This festival exodus mirrors wider industry tensions, including calls to remove Kevin Zegers from a project, withdrawals over Maureen Lipman's comments, and a petition against Macklemore for shouting "Free Palestine" at a concert.
This boycott could signal a deepening divide within the entertainment industry, where artists may face pressure to align with specific political stances. Festival organizers might struggle to secure diverse lineups, while audiences could see cultural events become battlegrounds for geopolitical issues.
