Michigan Funds Research into Underground Hydrogen Reserves

Michigan is allocating $7.5 million to study geologic hydrogen, a potential carbon-free fuel source. If viable, it could help decarbonize heavy industries like transportation and manufacturing. The state sits on the Midcontinent Rift, an area with high potential for natural hydrogen.
The investment follows a 2025 U.S. Geological Survey that placed Michigan among the top regions for potential buried hydrogen. That report prompted Governor Whitmer to order state research earlier this year, while comparable drilling efforts are already underway in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa.
Michigan's geological setting, the Midcontinent Rift, features older rock layers near the basin's edges, including areas close to Detroit and Traverse City, where hydrogen may have formed. Additionally, existing oil and gas wells in northern Michigan offer ready-made equipment for exploratory drilling, potentially accelerating the research timeline.
If research confirms viable reserves, Michigan could develop a new energy sector that may help decarbonize heavy transport and manufacturing, potentially lowering emissions in urban centers near the basin edges. This could create jobs in drilling and infrastructure, though economic benefits may take years to materialize. Residents in northern Michigan might see increased drilling activity, while the state's overall carbon footprint could shrink if hydrogen displaces fossil fuels in power generation.
