Study Finds Dangerous Lead Contamination Near Oregon's Small Airports

Researchers from Oregon State and Portland State found lead levels seven times higher near Hillsboro and Troutdale airports than in other urban areas. The lead is traced to leaded aviation fuel used by small piston-engine aircraft. This poses a health risk, especially to children, and is a national problem affecting thousands of airports.
The investigation employed a cost-effective biomonitoring technique, analyzing moss collected from street trees to detect lead deposition. Findings indicated the heaviest contamination occurred within a half-mile radius of the airfields. Notably, the Hillsboro facility ranks tenth nationally for estimated lead emissions, whereas the major commercial airport in the region sits far lower on that list.
Although an unleaded fuel alternative received approval in 2022, its adoption remains limited due to aircraft certification requirements and scarce availability at fuel pumps. Consequently, no federal prohibition exists on the leaded variant. In response, local municipal leaders recently passed a resolution urging the airport authority to address the issue.
This study could heighten public awareness regarding the hidden health costs of general aviation. Residents living near the thousands of small airports across the nation may face elevated exposure risks, particularly children whose neurological development is vulnerable. The findings could pressure federal regulators to expedite the transition to unleaded fuels, or prompt more local municipalities to demand stricter environmental oversight, potentially reshaping how smaller aviation hubs operate.
