Microplastic Particles Prevalent in Lungs of Cancer Patients

In a prospective study of 100 people undergoing bronchoscopy, microplastics were detected more frequently in those with lung cancer than without (66% vs 46%). The association held after adjusting for smoking, age, and sex, with an odds ratio of 2.0. Researchers caution that the study doesn't establish causation.
The prospective study, presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress, involved 100 individuals undergoing diagnostic bronchoscopy. After controlling for smoking, age, and sex, the odds of having lung cancer were twice as high for those with microplastic particles present. Cancer patients typically had one particle in their lavage fluid, while controls had virtually none.
Microplastics are pervasive environmental contaminants already associated with cardiovascular and cognitive issues. However, experts stress the observational design and small cohort prevent causal conclusions, noting that occupational exposures, underlying lung conditions, or even the bronchoscopy procedure itself could influence the findings.
This finding could heighten public concern about ubiquitous plastic exposure, potentially prompting individuals to adopt precautionary measures like avoiding plastic cookware or synthetic fabrics. Patients with existing lung conditions may face increased anxiety regarding environmental risk factors. However, since causation remains unproven, the study may primarily influence research priorities, steering funding toward larger, more comprehensive investigations that account for occupational and lifestyle confounders before any clinical guidelines change.
