The update replaces Audacity's traditional destructive workflow, where trimming permanently deleted audio, with a flexible system that preserves original data. Additional improvements include a new clip-splitting tool, refreshed envelope controls, and a redesigned home screen for better project management. The interface also adopts customizable themes, aligning it visually with Muse Group's other software like MuseScore and Audio.com.
Audacity has remained largely unchanged since its 2000 debut, with features bolted on over time. This overhaul addresses long-standing usability complaints, bringing the free editor closer to professional digital audio workstations. The final logo, following last year's controversial draft, is also less jarring.
