Brain's reading network draws on pre-existing systems, twin study suggests

A new study using high-resolution brain scans and twin comparisons found that several brain areas linked to reading ability show heritable connections. The study leveraged data from the Human Connectome Project, which supplied high-resolution brain scans of healthy young adults who completed language assessments separately from scanning. By comparing twins with varying degrees of genetic overlap, researchers could distinguish heritable brain features from those shaped by individual experience. A key finding centers on the medial belt area, a region adjacent to the primary auditory cortex in the left temporal lobe, which appears tuned to detect slow changes in loudness that mark syllable boundaries—an auditory skill foundational to early reading development.
This research addresses a fundamental evolutionary puzzle: reading emerged too recently for the brain to have developed a dedicated neural center for it. Instead, the brain must repurpose existing systems, and identifying which pre-existing structures contribute to reading could explain individual differences in reading proficiency.
