Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian civilians condemned as war crimes
A video posted by Russian military showing a drone killing an unarmed Ukrainian cyclist has sparked outrage, though it was later deleted. The deleted video, posted Friday on the 3rd Army Corps' official Telegram channel, showed an unarmed cyclist in civilian clothes near Kramatorsk in the northern Donetsk region. Independent outlet Astra disputed the military's claim that the man was an enemy combatant, and the footage was removed after widespread condemnation, including from former chess champion Garry Kasparov.
The UN commission has classified such drone attacks on civilians as war crimes. The practice reportedly began in Kherson in July 2024, evolving from small quadcopters dropping explosives to FPV impact drones. Documented targets have included pedestrians, cyclists, private cars, buses, ambulances, and rescue workers, according to analyst Will Kingston-Cox.
