United announces largest international route expansion in its history for 2027
United Airlines will launch 13 new international routes to 10 destinations in summer 2027, marking its largest route expansion ever. The new service includes the first nonstop flights from the U.S. to Slovenia and Luxembourg, as well as new cities in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France. The carrier says the expansion builds on recent additions like Greenland and Mongolia.
The announcement, made Tuesday, continues United's annual summer route reveal tradition. Seven of the ten new destinations currently lack any nonstop service from the US, while only two—Catania and Olbia—are already served by another American carrier. Nine of the ten new cities are in Europe, with Newark gaining eight new European routes.
Beyond the ten new destinations, United also plans three additional routes connecting US cities to existing international destinations, including daily year-round Los Angeles-to-Osaka service on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners beginning March 27. All new flights launch between March and June 2027, building on recent additions like Greenland, Mongolia, and Palermo.
This expansion could meaningfully shift leisure travel options for US consumers, particularly those seeking less-touristed European destinations. Travelers may benefit from added convenience and competition on routes that previously required connections.
