Multi-State Outbreak of Salmonella and E. coli Traced to Alfalfa Sprouts
U.S. health officials report 55 cases of food poisoning across 15 states linked to alfalfa sprouts, with both Salmonella and E. coli infections. The CDC says 26 of 34 interviewed patients reported eating the sprouts, and the FDA has linked the cases to a Minnesota grower, Everything Sprouts. The outbreak involves a rare combination of pathogens, with both Salmonella and multiple strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli identified among the 55 confirmed cases. Hospitalizations have been reported in four patients, though no deaths have been mentioned. The CDC’s case count spans 15 states, with the highest documented numbers initially emerging from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Federal investigators traced the source to a single Minnesota grower, Everything Sprouts, whose products were distributed under two brand names to restaurants and grocery stores. Notably, the FDA had flagged the facility last year for sanitation issues, including a leaking roof contaminating bean sprouts and improper worker smocks, yet no recall has been issued as of the report.
This outbreak could heighten public concern over raw sprout consumption, a known risk due to their growth conditions. Consumers, particularly those with weakened immune systems, may avoid sprouts, affecting restaurants and grocers. The lack of a recall despite prior FDA warnings could erode trust in regulatory oversight, prompting calls for stricter enforcement.
